Sprout Needs Glasses!

I can't believe it. This busy little guy...

needs glasses!

GLASSES!

091e

We have been noticing small things, like when we would say, “Look at the cow” or “Look at the horse” out the window while driving, and Sprout would keep saying, “Where, where?”

So DH took Sprout yesterday to the eye doctor and they confirmed…he has my eyes! I have terrible astigmatism and apparently so does Sprout. He also is an 8 for far sightedness, when most kids are a 2!

I'm worried for him. I’ve had glasses (now contacts) since I was in Kindergarten. I know what it’s like to be a kid and have to be “four eyes.” I was hoping so hard for my boys to have perfect vision, but apparently God and genetics have other plans.

I know we have been blessed with healthy kids and this really is a minor thing in the big picture. I’m trying to be okay with it. So please be kind, I’m still a bit in shock, if you will. Is that weird? But basically, my boy will forever look different. I just don't want him to go through what I went through in school. I'm hoping things are different nowadays.

By the way, do they make aqua-marine (thanks to Blues Clues) glasses??? That’s what he wants. So we’ll be off to shop for glasses this weekend!

Aw! I bet he'll be the cutest think in those aquamarine glasses! I know what you mean about just feeling a bit shocked--I felt that way when we found out about Chase's nut allergy. I never thought I'd be the mom with the epipen at the ready, but here I am. You adjust until it becomes the new normal. :-)

Oh no! My youngest had to get glasses this year. I am hoping that his eyes aren't as bad as mine. Right now the doctor is saying "wear them a lot and you might not have a problem later". Unfortunately, his mother is practically blind and, too, has an astigmatism in one eye. Fun huh!

Followed you over from blogfrog!

He is going to look adorable in glasses!

Sorry about sprout needing glasses. I've got an astigmatism in one eye and should wear glasses, but I can get by since my other eye compensates. I've been wondering if our little girl will need glasses like her mommy. She only two, so time will tell. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog. I hear most of the country is going to have great weather this weekend. Get outside and enjoy some of it if you can. Have a great weekend whatever you do!

I wore glasses for part of my growing years too. Then, later in life I needed them again. Now I wear contacts, so no one really knows.

With the advancements in technology now, glasses aren't like they were in my day. I'm sure you can find him pairs that he will like and look good on him. LOL, best of luck with the aqua-marines.

It's okay to feel a little shocked and upset by it but with the right pair of glasses it will just make him that much cuter.

@ Everyone

Thanks! I figured my boys might need glasses sooner or later, but to hear that a 4 year old needs them NOW was kind of surprising.

You guys are great!

I totally get it - it is so hard to see our children struggle, no matter how minor. But I always tell myself that these tests will make them stronger in the long run. Plus who doesn't look cute in glasses :)?

Story: When my daughter was in 2nd grade she had to get glasses. I didn't know until the teacher noticed. (guilt 1- stab to my heart) After she got her glasses -they were a pale blue and so cute- we were driving home and she looked out the window and said, "Mommy, there's leaves on the trees." (guilt 2 -BIG stab to my heart.) All the way home- 35 miles- she noticed a world she hadn't seen before.

Sprout will be so cute.

It'll be OK! I know it's hard cause you don't want him to be teased.
I'm sure with your positive encouragement Sprout will be fine with this new transition.

I honestly don't believe kids get teased about glasses anymore. At least when I taught I never noticed any of the students saying anything. I am sure he will look adorable.

AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

I just wrote you a book for a reply. Huge, long, comment.

Guess what? It didn't go through.

Boo!

Anyway, condensed version: Our Belle got glasses in Kindergarten...was tough on me too, her classmates thought she was the bomb-diggity, don't leave the clinic until you are CERTAIN that they fit him well.

That's it, in a nutshell.

I could scream! I hate it when you write long, thoughtful comments, and a stupid internet glitch wipes it out!

Visiting from Mom Loop. I remember when my son, who is now 13, got glasses. I was so worried about the teasing and come to find out it was a non-issue. In fact it was kind of trendy at the time.

He is going to be super cute! The advances nowadays are amazing. Once he has finished growing, he will be able to get corrective surgery. Until then he will be that good looking boy with the glasses. :-)

I got my glasses in second grade, and I really hope genetics help my kids, too! My husband's eyes are not nearly as bad as mine...time will tell.

I can understand what you are feeling. I have been using glasses since my school days and its pretty annoying when at times i am unable to see things clearly even with them on.
I hope his vision improves.
