We were on vacation at a resort on a lake this past week. Monday afternoon, Sprout came running into the room,
“Fire, Fire! Daddy has fire!”
I looked out on the deck of our rented lodge room and saw flames shooting up out of the grill as DH desperately tried to save our burgers he had just thrown on. He managed to pry the seared raw meat from the burnt tin foil, then unplugged the electric grill, and pulled it away from the building.
He came inside and said the grill was instant flames as soon as he turned it on. Before I even had a chance to suggest just frying the burgers, Sprout came running from the window and yelled,
“Fire, there’s fire!”
I looked out and saw an entirely engulfed grill with flames shooting ten feet in the air. Without words, DH ran for the extinguisher while I ran to the phone. I knew I had to plug it in since the boys had been playing with it. All my tunnel vision focused on getting the phone jack in the correct way and then pushing the front desk button. When the woman answered, I said, “The grill on our deck is on fire and fully engulfed.” She didn’t panic but very quickly said she was sending the manager. I hung up and ran out to the deck. DH was in the process of dousing the grill and the flames were mere smoke at that point.
Moments later, I heard loud steps in the hallway rumbling towards our door. I opened it to see two bulky men who were red faced and panic stricken, rushing towards me carrying fire extinguishers. I told them my husband had put it out and led them to the deck. Upon inspection, they agreed it wasn’t DH’s fault. The grill was just in desperate need of a cleaning and promised to bring us another one.
After some discussion of incident reports and the manager recounting how he saw the black smoke all the way from the lake, he apologized profusely and offered to buy us new burgers. We declined.
Here’s the boys watching as DH, the manager, and the maintenance man looked over the damage. The picture at the top is the grill after the fact, pushed back towards the building, and covered in extinguisher residue.
So the next day when we stopped at a store, guess which matchbox car Sprout picked out…

Oh Gosh! How Scary! It's always fun to tell those stories when everything turns out so safely. Good thing you and your hubby were so calm and knew what to do!
Glad everyone is safe!
Wow, that was a close call! I think it was kind of your landlord to offer to buy you burgers (and generous of you to decline).

glad everyone was ok...but these little incidents keep the days interesting sometimes...and inspire little ones imaginations. smiles.
Ohmy! Stuff like that is so scary, but makes for great stories once it is over and no one gets hurt. I love the matchbox car!
Glad to hear everything was okay in the end and that it was onlt the burgers who suffered during the incident!
You got a great little story out of it all though!
oooh man, when we were in the hotel they had a fit if you tried to grill on your balcony. i so see why. so what did you do since you could not have burgers. you and i are alike because i would not have wanted them to pay for my burgers
Hi there, I'm visiting from Amy's Round Robin. Very scary! I'm happy everyone is ok though. :-)
I shall say WOW and then WOW again. God was watching over you, Girl. That could have turned out terrible. Whew.
I love that your kids picked out the fire truck! That's a hoot!
Of course I'm sure it didn't seem so at the time...but what a cute story - when you add the Matchbox car ending to it! :)
Glad everyone was okay and nothing was damaged!
Hope you get an awesome new grill! I'm ready for grillin' season to start here, too!
Oh may what I story. Thanks for sharing it for Family Fridays.. It was a great happy ending. Love the fire truck that your son picked. I would have done the same. Thanks again for linking up..
Have a great weekend.
What could have been very scary and dangerous you turned into an entertaining story. Quick thinking all around! My husband is good at handling those situations too, where I usually screech and run around in circles.
Wow, that is crazy. We had a grill go up like that at our summer home.
Holy Moley!!!! What a story!!! I would have been in a panic and lost my mind!!!! I'm in awe of you!!! You and you husband rock!!
Wow! Close call! Good thinking on the part of the little one...looks like a firetruck might be a good investment! lol
Thank goodness for children looking and calling out!! I'm glad everyone is OK. Scary!
You brought back a memory... Greg was cooking on the grill outside. He was multi-tasking things inside as well and when the phone rang, he completely forgot the food on the grill.
Greg saw the smoke and took the meat off. Oh man, lots of smoke, but it was OK. As Greg was cleaning up the mess, a guy ran into our backyard. The guy thought our house was on fire and he was a fireman who lived down the street. (Grateful for neighbors who come to assist without knowing the cause or person!)
WOW! What a story! So glad it turned out better than it *could* have.
What cute little guys you have!
OH my goodness! I'm so glad your husband did not get burned, and the cabin did not catch on fire too.

WOW!! I'm glad all of you were able to stay calm. I think I would be panicking by now. It was scary reading your post, so thankful everything turned out all right and that your son got a fire truck :)

Oh my goodness! Scary!
Glad no one got hurt! That would be so scary.
Just another great memory created for your golden years. Nothing like a little excitement when getting away.
Eeek that's scary, I'm glad no one was hurt. That will be one you remember years from now!
If you get a chance stop by my blog for a chance to win a Real Simple Cookbook!
lol NOt how I was expecting it to end!! So glad you are all safe and no one was hurt. I would have TOTALLY taken up the manager on his offer for new burgers. Hello!
I kid. :)
Oh my gosh, kinda funny...but glad everyone is okay. That was totally our grill last week, yeah it needs a cleaning too. :)
Wow! You can always say you had a BLAST on your vacation...or your trip was so fun it was ON FIRE. Eek. And the boys are cute watching the action.
glad everyone is okay! what an experience!
Wow, that was quite the adventure!
Glad your all safe. Sorry about the burgers :(
That is too funny. I am glad that nothing was ruined and no one got hurt though.
Oh I am so glad it was nothing more serious.
He offered to buy you BURGERS!?? Are you kidding me? What if your children were near that fire??
Oh I'm cross now.
I'd want a free night or something for my trauma.
Glad everyone was ok.
I'm glad everything turned out ok! Talk about an exciting vacation, right?
Um, sweetie, they were STEAKS, not burgers, right?! Chuckle! What a way to get your adrenalin flowing, vacation started & all ends well with the 'arrival of' the fire truck.
So glad everyone is safe. Cute write, tho, despite it all.
Happy St. Patrick's Day ~
Have a lovely weekend.

Scary for you, and probably the near highlight of the trip for the boys. Love the image of them looking out!
Glad no one was hurt!
That is scary but funny! I bet the boys will be talking about it for a long time.
Wow, this is startling. I can't believe that...life is strange.

Wow that must have been super scary! That must have been quite the show for the kids though. I think If I was the manager however, I would be offering you another night FREE instead of offering to buy more burgers lol
I am certainly glad that everything turned out okay. That must have been scary. I hope, too, that your vacation was still enjoyable. I'm sure it was for the boys...love the last pic!
These are the stories to cherish. Even though it was scary while it happened the kids will appreciate it when they get older, and it will be retold so many times!
Wow! So glad no one was hurt! Fires scare me..when I was young, my baby brother (around 3 at the time) put some of his toys in the broiler section of the stove (this was back in the 70's when it was not a storage section!). Well, my mom put bbq chicken in the oven for dinner. We were all upstairs when we smelled smoke. By then, the entire kitchen was on fire, and we had to RUN out of the house in the snow..with bare feet! The entire house was full of black soot when we were allowed back in. It was horrible :(
I'm so glad everything turned out well for you! Your boys look so cute sitting there :)
Have a great weekend!

Oh my...glad everyone was safe! I was grilling the other day (gas) and was greeted by some flames (albeit not nearly as scary as the ones y'all encountered)....grabbed my food off the grill, walked back inside to find the squirt bottle of water...made SURE it was WATER, and walked back outside with my husband following me after hearing me repeat "The grill is one fire. The grill is on fire. The grill is on fire." When he went outside and saw that the "grill was on fire"...he was blown away that I wasn't exaggerating and that I was so calm. ;o)
Glad all turned out well... gotta love a little excitement!~ =)
Just Jenn
Wow! Now that's a way to get your heart pumping!
So what DID you get to eat for supper? Burnt sacrifice is always fun!
