My Uncle

He was murdered when I was six.

I remember the news coverage. I was sitting on my Grandma and Grandpa's shaggy living room carpet. The TV screen showed the gurney with my uncle's body being brought down the steps of the duplex.

The family rumor was that his wife was cheating on him. When he returned home one day, he caught her in bed with another man. My uncle threatened her lover with a knife. Her lover pulled out a gun and shot him.

That's about all I ever knew of the story until last year. On a whim, I happened to ask the Homicide Commander if I could see the file, since it's a closed case and public record. See, it happened in the Big City, the city I work for.

He said sure, he would let Sgt. Davis, the cold case investigator, know since she's the one with access to all the archives. Sgt. Davis, or Liz, also happens to be my friend. She had no idea I had an uncle murdered in the city. No one on the department did. It's not something I really like to advertise.

I asked Liz to remove the crime scene photos, I just didn't need to see that. I sat down in one of the interrogation rooms with the overstuffed, disintegrating file folder. As I dug through the mounds of sketches, handwritten incident reports, and property sheets, I was able to piece together what really happened that night.

Contrary to my family's version of the story, my uncle actually went over to the lover's house. They apparently were friends. They had a few beers. Then, my uncle confronted the lover about the affair. There was a scuffle. The neighbor said he heard my uncle pleading, "Don't shoot me, don't shoot me", then shots rang out. By the time the police arrived, my uncle was dead.

The lover claimed, when interviewed, my uncle came at him with a knife, so he shot him in self defense. The jury didn't buy it. The lover went to prison, guilty of manslaughter.

And it turns out, my aunt was never even there.

Author's Note: This is a true story, only the names have been changed. My uncle was my mom's brother and his wife eventually distanced herself from the family, taking their two children with her.

CM, From a writer's perspective, what a great first line. I am sorry about your uncle. Family secrets (or not) are so one sided. It's the self preservation of sanity to make the injurous story go our way.

Oh my goodness, I'm not sure what to say here. It does show that people can snap and do terrible things at any time.

@ JW

Thank you for your support of my writing. I was nervous posting this, but in the end, it is part of my story, my life.

I'm sorry your family had to endure that. It must have been so surreal looking through the case file.

You have a good weekend!

Following from Friday Follow. That's a very intense story and must be so tough for you to think about. I respect the work you do.

You have me riveted from the first sentence! What a sad story. Thank you for being brave enough to share it with us!

I suppose every family has some tragedy in their history, but not everyone has the chance to find out the truth like you did. My mother-in-law's father has a mystery surrounding his death, and she always said she didn't want to talk about it. I don't think we'll ever know what happened.

I am so glad that you decided to share your story. I applaude you for having the courage to look through the file. I am not sure if I was handed the file about my father that I could have read it. I am glad that you got answers, although they don't make it any less tragic. It takes courage to put things out there that aren't happy and light, it really does, but it is all a part of life and who we are! Thank you for sharing today!

A big hug to you from STL...

but on the flip side, you are an excellent mystery writer.

What a senseless tragedy. The more you get to know people, the more you realize everyone goes through terrible times, everyone has family issues that wear them down. I hope reading through the files helped you. And thanks for sharing your story.

Wow I am so sorry to hear that. You know we watch a ton of the CSI and Law and Order shows and the stories are awful but I forget that this stuff actually happens to real people. So sad.

So many events in our lives shape the people that we are today. You can either use them for good, or for evil. It's very apparent that through God's help, you're using these events for good. Bless you, friend!

Wow, that's intense. How hard for your grandparents.

Does it help that you know what really happened?

Thank you for sharing your story. A family member recently told me they admire my honesty on my blog. I admire your honesty! What a moving story.

Wow. I think that is all I can say. Wow.

It must have been nice to finally piece things together. I know I have a great uncle who was killed in WWII but no one knew for sure what had happened to him - he was MIA then they figured he was a POW. Eventually we all found out he was KIA. Never knew him but a part of you always wonders what happened to your family.

I think you are braver than I. I know I would want to know and would want to look at the file but I don't know if I could have. I know, like you, I wouldn't want to see the pictures. I don't want that image etched in my brain - my imagination is good enough thankyouverymuch.

Thanks for sharing.

Also, I was going to say I think I might know Sgt. Davis, but you probably changed the name of him too. ;)

Wow ..when I first started reading I thought maybe that is why you became a cop...have you ever seen your cousins again..and I wonder if they know the real story..beer and knives and affairs do not mix...so many tragedies happen like that..!

Bless your heart for sharing! We all have those stories... and slowly some of us will share too.. b/c others (you) have opened their hearts and lives to us! =)

I hope this comment is not rude!... Do you ever watch Castle on ABC? Monday nights? I sincerely felt like I was 'reading' an episode of that detective show! You might like it?!

Silly Jenn~

Thank you for opening up to us. I can't imagine "that" 6 year old watching the news coverage, trying to understand it and all that it entailed. My heart breaks for you.

I can't even imagine going through something like that and then finding out what really happened. That has to be so hard to deal with.

Emmy said...

Wow, that would be so weird and hard to read the case like that from your place in life now.

Helene said...

I found you through Amy's blog. I'm sure this was a difficult story to share and I'm so sorry for your loss.

It took a lot of strength and courage to do what you did...I'm not sure I would've had that same courage.

It's nice to know the truth. That is so sad. That had to be hard on your mother and her family.

What a sad story for everyone involved.

Becky said...

That is neat that you got to investigate it and get to the meat of the story...

I'm so sorry for your family's loss. How sad for your mom.

Mike's grandma watched her father kill her mother in front of her when she was a little girl. It is said that he was the first man to get the electric chair in our state. We have tried to look up this information to no avail...All we know is his name really. It would be neat to know this part of our family's history even though it is so tragic and sad...

All I can say is WOW. So sad!

brooke lynn said...

i'm glad you got closure and the truth instead of just wondering!!

Oh, my. I cannot imagine the emotion going through the file...even if the case was closed. I'm sure you are probably relieved to know the truth, though. Thank you for sharing this.

Gosh, I had no idea. You are brave to read the file, but then again I might want to have known too.

I hope some healing for you or other members of your family can take place with the truth out. Wow. It must have been hard to have so many questions for so many years. I hope that man in still in prison.

It is always better to live in the truth, yes? I'm so sorry for your family's loss, but comforted to know that justice did its job.

The truth is a powerful thing, even when it is a tough one to swallow, don't you think? Especially given your profession, I imagine. I wonder if this tragedy early in your life had anything to do with your desire to become a police officer?
Thank you so much for sharing. I think many of us have secrets - some of them our own, some family secrets. YOu must know you're not alone there. Your honesty is commendable. And, your writing is riveting.

MY husband has a great-uncle murder mystery in his family. We were visiting his family back east and his aunt was looking through pictures and there was a man pictured with all of the mother's brothers and sisters that no one recognized. That's because they don't talk about it. She said, "Mom, who's this person?" She said, "Oh that's your Uncle Robert. He got what he deserved." She said it so casually. We still don't know what happened, but we've been trying to figure it out. I love when you share these little snippets from your life. It's brave and personal, but it's also very fascinating!
